Job description

o Are you an experienced NDT technician that is able to manage and motivate a small NDT department for a Specialist Welding House to the Rail Industry.

o Reporting directly to the Engineering Director, you will be responsible for two other technicians onsite and support a small self-contained team of offsite welders and NDT technicians.

o You must be proficient in the testing of welds using the following NDT methods: MT & PT (both daylight visible) and UT. Visual inspection also required. Yes, you will have to get your hands dirty as well.

My client is a specialist in the sector, and with a track record of expertise which extends back to 1994, they have become a trusted supplier for many of the rail industry’s biggest and best known names. They have recently gained EN 15085 accreditation, which is rapidly becoming a prerequisite for contract awards.

Purpose of role: 

Manage and mentor a small team of NDT technicians in the performance of their tasks. The primary one being to carry out NDT of welds (post fabrication and repair) in a rail maintenance facility.

Ensure that standards of work and certification is maintained by all.

Duties and responsibilities: 

o Manage team of NDT technicians

o Be responsible for their training and development

o Organise team resources to ensure the workflow is delivered in line with weekly schedules agreed with operations

o Ensure a full complement of works staff is available and arrange cover in times of absence

o Ensure bought-in services are of the highest standard

o Ensure technicians maintain discipline, housekeeping and adhere to company policy standards and principles

o Prepare for approval of written NDT procedures (external Level 3)

o Manage technician training courses as required

o Provide specialist advice on all aspects of NDT

o Ensure only suitably qualified staff are used to carry out testing

o Carry out defect analysis using the following methods: ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT) and dye penetrant testing (PT)

o In addition to the duties and responsibilities detailed above, the job holder may be required to perform other duties assigned by the Engineering Director.

Person specification: 

Essential: Recognised Level 2 NDT certification in UT, MT & PT 

Desirable: CSWIP certification; Rail maintenance/NDT experience. 

Work pattern: 

Flexible working hours (banked hours system)

37 hrs Mon - Thu 0800 - 1630, Fri 0800 - 1300 

Holidays: 25 days + 8 Bank Holidays
